The kid was red-faced and crying and the Jeep smelled of shit. He unbuckled the baby seat and carried the kid over to a wet picnic table, set the plastic seat down in the centre of the table. He rested for a moment, hands on his knees, caught his breath.

I bet you’re hungry, aren’t you little guy?

From the pocket of the windbreaker he took the sandwich he had prepared for himself and opened the plastic wrap and gave the kid the cheese sandwich. The kid dug its fingers into the soft white bread and put the sandwich up to its mouth.

If no one came for hours, the table would be in shade until late afternoon, anyway. He re-tucked the towel around the kid’s legs. It would have to sit in its own stink, there was nothing he could do about that. Hopefully the kid could eat the sandwich. With any luck a car would be along within an hour. The ramp was usually busy all weekend, with boat trailers parked along the side of the road practically back to the dam turn-off. It wouldn’t take long for whoever showed up to figure out something was wrong: the Jeep and empty trailer parked off the ramp, the kid sitting in the middle of the picnic table, no sign of boat or driver.

He switched the radio on low, to keep the kid company, and then walked to the bottom of the ramp and braced his feet and flung the Jeep’s keys far out into the reservoir. The kid looked at the splash and back at him.

Alright, he said to the kid. You’re a tough guy, aren’t you?

He put his hand on the top of the kid’s head for a moment, then bent down and kissed the soft hair. The smell of talcum powder and shit.
